Snowed in

My husband and I have been snowed in for 2 days now. We have about 5 inches of snow and ice. Other parts of middle Tennessee got up to 8 inches and lots more ice. The snow didn't cling to the trees, but ice did. The sun is shining bright today so maybe some of it will melt, but back down to lower teens tonight.

We're catching up on old movies we've never seen. We watched "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "The Graduate" and "In Cold Blood" (these are "on demand" from comcast).

Everyone have a great weekend.

Flannel Quilt and thrift finds

I made this quilt for my husband in 2003. It was really fun to make. This was in Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting Jan/Feb 2003. I've been collecting flannel ever since 2003 to some day make another one.

Today I found these 3 flannel skirts $.25 each for a future quilt.

still recovering, but thrifting

My hand is still in a brace (may be a few more weeks). Still can't sew, but I can thrift. Here's a few things I've thrifted lately.

Mirror was $1.99 at Goodwill
Ruby wanted this rooster. There were 3 different sizes. I got the smallest one.
Oil lamp $1.99 at Goodwill. bad picture.

No sewing

My little surgery turned in to something more. The doctor was so behind on surgeries. The one before me took an extra 2 hours, then he had to eat lunch. Anyway I was there at 10:00 and left at 5:00. My surgery was longer than it was supposed to be. He had to do more digging and cutting than he first thought. I was supposed to leave with a band aid and start using my hand the next day. Instead I have this cast and can't lift or move my fingers. I go to therapy tomorrow, so we'll see.

Fun at the park

Picture of Ruby from yesterday
Yesterday Ruby and I went to the park and played. It was at least 55 degrees and the sun shining. She went wild in that fresh air and sunshine. We all had been cooped up since new years. So today we went back and took Layla. This park has a sand pit with lots of trucks. The sun wasn't out and a little cooler, but still fun. It started raining while we were there. These pictures are with my cell phone.

Monday I will be having surgery on my left hand. I have a trigger finger they say can be fixed. We'll see.

Camera pouch

I tried this tutorial for a new camera pouch from Pink Penguin. It was super easy and fast. I used a ponytail holder instead of buttonhole. My machine doesn't do well with thick fabric. Now I need to make a case for Ashley's IPod touch. I need to add about an inch all around.

P.S. It looks better closed with the camera in it.

Played in the snow

We didn't get much snow but the kids had a great time in it. The temperature hasn't been above 25 in the daytime in over a week. This is the first snow that Ruby remembers. She thinks it's supposed to be Christmas again, because it snowed. We stayed out an hour and that was too much.

I made another backpack

I loved it so much I had to make another one (yeah right). I couldn't leave Ruby out. She would be very disappointed. It was a lot easier, because I worked out the difficult areas in the first one (only took an hour and a half. The corduroy is a remnant from Joann's. Applique and button I've had a long time.

Backpack finally finished

I used Simplicity 5284 and it was a booger. Not that is was that difficult to make, I just kept making mistakes. A lot of times I give up when I have to take out seams 3 or 4 times. First of all I put 1 D ring on each size instead of 2, I took out the straps and moved them 3 times. The pattern shows to leave the bottom open for turning, the fabric is so thick and with the straps I couldn't hand sew. I took it apart and sewed the bottom and left the side open (much better). Layla had already seen me sewing on it so I knew it had to be finished. The fabric is denim and was given to me by Aunt Louise. The button is a vintage button from an estate sale.

Merry Christmas

Lori was very surprised. She saw this at an antique store back in May. I went back a few weeks ago and they still had it. I love to surprise.
Merry Christmas to all of my friends and their families out there in blogland. I love you all.

We open presents with our family on Christmas eve night. Today we'll go to my parents and have dinner and open gifts.

Layla made a purse

Layla made herself a cute little bag tonight. She picked out the button and I sewed it on for her. She put her coloring books in it to carry every where. She's getting to be quite the seamstress.

Elephant, Clown and Dave

The elephant was a little complicated, but finally finished it (the fabric was so hard to work with). The clown was my very favorite to make. Her name is Daisy (my husband named her.)
There is a story behind Daisy. When my grandson Jakob was 6 months old he received a cute little clown from my aunt (from a yard sale). My husband named him Dave. Every time he handed it to Jakob he would call it Dave. Well Dave was his first word. Over the years Dave got worn out. We had washed him many times. He had a music box inside and we took it out so we could put him in the washer. I sewed him a lot and put new pom-pom's on his cap. When Jakob was 9 Lori went to a big sale and found another Dave. That was pretty amazing since we had looked everywhere for a new one. His name became Steve. Now Jakob is too big for them but Lori still has them both. Thomas decided this is Dave's girlfriend Daisy.Isn't that the most precious thing you have ever seen.

Pillows for my bench

My new (old) bench needed some comfortable pillows. I've had this material for many years. It's quilted corduroy. I've been meaning to make jackets for the girls. They have plenty of jackets. It's very comfortable.

Finished softies

The girls definitely won't keep those ribbons around their necks. The cat's eyes and ears look a little wonky. Maybe Ruby won't notice. Their only 8 inches long. I will be making more of these.

Making softies

I bought this very easy pattern at Joann's Friday ($1.99). So far it's been easy. These will make great Christmas gifts. The white kitty is fleece and the dog is a soft velvet like fabric. I'm hoping to finish them today. Layla picked out the dog and Ruby the kitty. I want to make Aiden one of these. I love the clown and really want to make it.

More Christmas gifts made

These come in really handy. I use mine all the time. Used this tutorial, but it's about and inch too wide for my tissues. So I had to cut it down. I'm pretty sure I used this one when I made mine. Just couldn't find it when I needed it.

coffee cozy

I used Erin's tutorial from House on Hill Road for my coffee cozies. These will be Christmas gifts. Very easy to make. I used my Estate Sale buttons.

Christmas Bags

Made this drawstring bag for my Mom's present. I did line the bag, it just looks neater. Hopefully she will reuse it. The bag really makes the gift a little more special. The snowman in the background is sitting behind the bag. Also made 2 more gift card holders. These are quick and fun.
